Book Description:
Five years in a New York state reformatory have left a blemish on Hazel's real name. So when she takes a job as Doctor Gilbert Watts's lady in attendance in 1898, she does so under an alias. In the presence of her quiet and pious employer, Hazel finds more than an income. She finds a friend and a hope that if she can set her tarnished past in order, she might have a future after all.
As Gilbert becomes accustomed to the pleasant chatter of his new dental assistant, he can't help but sense something secretive about her. Perhaps there is more to this woman than meets the eye. Can the questions that loom between them ever be answered? Or will the deeds of days gone by forever rob the future of its possibilities?
Rachel Fordham pens a tender tale of a soft-spoken man, a hardened woman, and the friends that stand by them as they work toward a common purpose--to expunge the record of someone society deemed beyond saving--and perhaps find love along the way.
My Thoughts:
I ended this book wondering what the rest of Hazel and Gilbert’s life would look like. If an author gets me to think about the characters long after I’ve closed the final chapter, they’ve written a book worth reading. At first, I wasn’t sure I’d like the story, but once the characters got into my head and heart, I loved this tale of redemption and second chances. Hazel is forth coming and bold, Gilbert is quiet and serious. But don’t be fooled by Gilbert’s soft-spoken ways, he is a true hero who comes to the rescue in times of trouble. As friendships unfold and foes join forces with them, Hazel finds out who truly cares. If you enjoy historical fiction with well-written characters and an interesting story, you’ll want to read A Lady in Attendance. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Unveiling the Past: A Novel by Kim Vogel Sawyer
Book
Description:
Newlyweds
Sean Eagle and Meghan DeFord are no strangers to pain and loss. As cold-case
detectives, they know intimately the anguish family members endure after the
murder or disappearance of a loved one. But when a new case hits too close to
home, it threatens to pull loose the fragile cords of their young marriage.
Sheila Menke was just a girl when her father left for work and never returned. An investigation revealed he had embezzled enough to start a new life elsewhere, but Sheila could never accept the court’s criminalization of her father. Meghan reluctantly takes the case, secretly fearing it will stir up buried feelings about her own biological father. And while Sean investigates the mysterious death of two young brothers, he longs to start a family. But Meghan worries that with a negligent mother and an absentee father as her parenting examples, she might never be fit for motherhood.
As they delve deeper into the past, both Meghan and Sheila must choose to either stumble along the road of bitterness and resentment or walk the difficult path toward forgiveness and healing. When the cases begin to break wide open, these young women are poised to discover that while earthly fathers may fail, there is one in heaven who is a father to the fatherless.
My Review:
Unveiling the Past rings of redemption, forgiveness, and grace. There are a couple of things I especially enjoyed. The author set the book up in short segments featuring the various points of view, which made the story easy to read. And the story focuses on women who no longer have fathers, but depend on their heavenly Father. Following the cold case detectives as they solved old crimes was interesting and fun. One thing I noticed in this story is Kim Vogel Sawyer used her writing to teach of Jesus' love without being preachy. The reader got to glimpse the way these characters might witness to their co-workers and friends. I also loved Sean and Meghan's relationship with each other. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

God Promises Restoration
1 Peter 5:6-10
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up
in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be
alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a
roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing
firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers
throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of
all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have
suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you
strong, firm and steadfast.
Living life as a Christ follower is no picnic.
At fourteen years old, I walked down the church aisle and gave my
life to Jesus. If you remember anything about the
teen years, peer pressure and mean girls infiltrated the school. I'd accepted Jesus the
summer between my eighth and ninth grade year. When I entered the doors to my high
school years, I waltzed in as a shiny new Christian. Even though many of my
friends went to church, my heartfelt love for God took a hit. For some reason,
friends turned on me and made fun of me. They couldn't understand why I wanted
to devote my life to Jesus. Thankfully, I was part of a great youth group. But
even at that, I sometimes felt alone in my stand for Christ. Satan never let
up.
Fast forward to many years later. I worked in an academic library. My
surroundings felt like high school all over again. As a believer working in a
liberal setting, my faith remained challenged. But this time, I understood why.
God's people are tested every day, all over the
world. Satan is relentless. But so is God. His love and grace surpass anything the devil temps us with. No matter what damage we suffer in this world, God promises to restore his children.
He offers his strength and support to give us the courage to continue life for
him and the hope of eternal life in heaven.
No matter the struggle, the broken heart, the disappointment, the sorrow, God promises restoration.

Cross and Crown
God blesses those who patiently endure testing and
temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God
has promised to those who love him.
Sunday morning at church, the worship team led us
in a beautiful rendition of "O
Come to the Altar" by Elevation Worship. As they strummed guitars and voices rose, I focused on the words. The song talks about Jesus and how he
has his arms open to us who may be hurting or searching. The words reminded me
that Jesus wants me to come to him and bow down, seeking his love. As I sang
along and we came to the end of the song, this line grabbed me—"Bear your
cross, as you wait on your crown."
That line describes life. Temptation and testing
happens every day. The devil never misses an opportunity to poke his ugly
fingers into our lives. He'd love more than anything for us to succumb to his
wily ways. But that's only part of the story. The second half of the line,
"wait on your crown" is overflowing with hope. As I seek Jesus, he
shores me up and equips me with the tools to fight back and knock Satan out of
my life. Jesus provides resistance and strength. As you bear your cross and
wait on your crown, know that Jesus stands with you.
...hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Ephesians 6:16
